The State Government's Percent for Art Scheme
The Western Australian Percent for Art Scheme allocates up to one per-cent of the estimated total construction cost of each State capital works project (which is $2million and over) to a commissioned Western Australian artwork. This includes refurbishments as well as new building works.
This scheme is a partnership between the Department of Culture and the Arts and the Department of Treasury and Finance's Building Management and Works Division in recognition of the intrinsic value of arts being seen, heard and felt in our buildings and structures.
History
The State Government’s Percent for Art scheme was established in 1989. The scheme commenced with two stages of five pilot projects in the early 1990's and has now built up to include a number of State Government building projects. Commissioning departments have included:
- Health
- Justice
- Education
- Police
- WA Government Rail
- Main Roads WA
Other public art projects are also commissioned throughout Western Australia by private bodies, Local Governments and other State Government departments, agencies or authorities.
As stated in Integrating Views: A Review of the State Government’s Percent for Art Scheme, 2003 more than 203 separate projects have been initiated. The scheme has provided opportunities for 200 individual artists, and greatly enhanced the value and beauty of public buildings with over 400 contemporary artworks commissioned.
